Overview
When designing an org structure, it can be easy to overlook subtle inefficiencies, such as a manager with too few reports or excessive org layers. Design principles are rules that your organization sets up to help users with designing their org structures. With design principles, you can create quantitative and qualitative rules to ensure consistent standards for your organization. Some common use cases include:
- Balancing workloads: Set rules for span of control to ensure employees have sufficient support, making it easy to spot overextended managers and redistribute direct reports.
-
Ensuring fair pay levels: Set rules that prevent managers and their direct reports from being assigned to the same pay grade, ensuring employees are compensated fairly and valued appropriately based on their responsibilities.
-
Distributing talent: Set rules for entry, mid, or executive career levels to ensure teams maintain a healthy balance of talent. This automatically flags structural risks, such as top-heavy teams with too many decision-makers, or junior-heavy teams lacking the senior leadership needed to guide execution.
